Union Army double bag tarred/leather knapsack. Carry all your goods on your back. Brass and leather galore.
I did classroom demonstrations and re-enactments for about 25 years and kept my gear and uniform in good shape with some wear and tear. It is time to sell it all, so see my other auctions to totally outfit and equip yourself into the 20th Maine (or pretty much any other Union infantry regiment). This also allows you to avoid the abuse heaped on newbies and their straight-from-the-sutler uniform and equipment. Ask if you have any questions.
People asked for condition specifics: This is mostly canvas that is painted with either tar or waterproof paint that has a tar-like feel. Similar to that of a painted haversack. There are some brass and some non-brass clasps. The stress points are reinforced leather. It is in pretty good shape. It is basically two bags that fold over each other and it worn on the back. In one side I would keep various personal items and int he other side I might put my shelter half or tent. I would roll my wool blanket up in my rubber blanket and attach that to the top of the knapsack using the leather straps. Kept my blanket dry. Nothing here is mint. I did a few hundred demonstrations for school kids and more than a few re-enactments. This stuff has been to Gettysburg (Not the actual battle or the movie, but you get the idea) so there is some wear and tear, and the brass will always have a hint of brass polish. You might notice that I mention brass polish a lot - If you do re-enactments, you will become very familiar with polishing.
