is for one Civil War Period U.S. Christian Commission Sewing Kit, complete with contents. The U.S. Christian Commission was a women's
auxiliary
organization whos purpose was to help provide help and relief to those soldiers fighting in the Civil War. This museum quality reproduction is
all hand constructed
, that has been made following instructions provided to women during the war.
The patterns were distributed on the home front by the Christian Commission so that women and children left behind could make these housewives for their beloved soldiers. Included in the instructions were the following words:
"It is said by many soldiers and sailors that a well-filled house-wife saves them from Five to Fifteen Dollars in cash. It enables them to mend their clothes, sew on buttons, &c., and thus preserves what would soon be destroyed, and have to be replaced by new. Beside this, the moral value of one of these little articles is often unspeakable. We are frequently asked how they should be made. The following is the most simple, convenient and serviceable style we have seen. Let them be of strong calico or similar material, double, plain, neat, with one pocket and needle-book, and well-made. Fill them with linen thread, needles, pins, buttons, &c."
The calico print fabric I've used is NOT the 'run of the mill' modern-day fabric you often see used today. My fabrics are Civil War period correct designed and produced by such women as Barbara Brackman, Judy Rothermel, and other experts on period textiles.
The button is an original black "china" (milk glass) button.
This kit measures 7-3/4" by 4" and is bound with black cotton sateen. Contents include: original bone & MOP buttons, sewing needles, straight pins, brass safety pin, black & white thread, patch material, and folding scissors. See pics for further details as they are part of the description.
