Civil War Sewing Kit "Housewife" w/U.S. Sanitary Commission Bag, Quality Reproduction.Sewing kits during the Civil War were common among the soldiers of both sides to use in making necessary repairs to their clothing and uniforms. Also known as "housewife" kits, this very needed items were given to soldiers by the mothers or wives and sometimes supplied to them by the various "women auxiliary groups that were formed during the war, such as the U.S. Sanitary Commission. Small items provided to the soldiers were commonly given to them in marked bags such as this one supplied with the sewing kit in this auction. This bag with the U.S.S.C. stamp is copied from an original, with all visible stitching by hand. The sewing kit is hand constructed and patterned off originals as well.
The outer body is made of brown wool and hand bound with brown polished cotton. The inside lining is made of cotton ticking while the pockets are made from cotton "homespun". The two layers of fabric to hold the sewing needles and straight pins are made from off-white wool. Besides sewing needles and straight pins, the kit also contains a number of original bone & MOP buttons, fabric swatches to patch repairs, black & off-white cotton thread, brass safety pin and folding scissors.
