The Society of the Army of the Cumberland
The Society was organized on February 6, 1868:
“To perpetuate the memory of the fortunes and achievements of the Army of the Cumberland; to preserve that unanimity of loyal sentiment and that kind and cordial feeling which has been an eminent characteristic of this army, and the main element of the power and success of its efforts in behalf of the cause of the Union. The history and glory of the officers and soldiers belonging to this army, who have fallen either on the field of battle or otherwise in the line of their duty, shall be a permanent trust to this Society, and every effort shall be made to collect and preserve the proper memorials of their services, to inscribe their names upon the roll of honor, and to transmit their fame to posterity. It shall also be the object and bounden duty of this Society to relieve, as far as possible, the families of such deceased officers and soldiers, when in indigent circumstances, either by the voluntary contribution of the members, or in such other manner as they may determine, when the cases are brought to their attention. This provision shall also hereafter apply to the suffering families of those members of the Society who may in the future be called hence, and the welfare of the soldier's widow and orphan shall forever be a holy trust in the hands of his surviving comrades.”
The first President of the Society was their beloved commander, Major-General George H. Thomas, USA, who also formed and led what is arguably the greatest fighting unit in the history of the United States, the 14
th
Corps. While some AoC units like the 7
th
PA Cavalry, continued to hold reunions up until the early 1920’s, I could not find any reference to an annual AoC reunion beyond their twenty-third which was held in Chattanooga on September 15-17, 1913.
The major features of this medal are the scroll and wreath surrounding the words, Army of the Cumberland, the Star representing the 11
th
and 12
th
Corps of the Army of the Potomac which were combined in July 1864 under Major General Joseph (Fighting Joe) Hooker and incorporated into the 20
th
Corps Army of the Cumberland, the Triangle of the 4
th
Corps under Major General Gordon Granger, and the Acorn representing General Thomas’ 14
th
Corps which, as the story goes, adopted this symbol because the men often ate roasted acorns when rations ran out, especially following its defeat at Chickamauga when the AoC fell back and was besieged at Chattanooga by Braxton Bragg’s Army of the Tennessee in the Fall of 1863.
While there are at least three variations of this medal which I’ve seen, including that worn by General Thomas, this particular medal is fashioned after the presentation version worn by Brigadier General Wirt Davis which is posted on the Arlington National Cemetery website.
Original medals are extremely rare! In fact, to date I have only seen two offered for sale anywhere; both on eBay with the first in July 2007 and the second in June 2013. They were, what appeared to be plain, standard issue membership badges, which sold for ,965 and ,500 respectively.
This recreation of an authentic period piece is a must for the Civil War enthusiast, re-enactor, living historian, student of the American Civil War, and medal collector. Because we strive to exactly replicate the original of each item we offer, we continually research and modify our offerings as necessary. In addition, where applicable, all are inscribed on the reverse or edge with our name and/or the mold creation date; so as not to be confused with, or presented to, some trusting individual as an authentic period piece.
