Description
This is a US M1857 .69 Caliber (Rifled Musket) Cartridge Box marked U.S. and Watervliet Arsenal (probably during the re-issue of equipment during the early war period.) This model was one of the transition boxes while the Army was changing from smooth bore to rifled arms, and differs from the later model in that this model uses no rivets in construction on either the rear belt loops or on the closure strap. This box is rigged for wear on either the belt or use of the shoulder sling. These cartridge box tins are shorter than the M1842 since the rifled cartridges required less powder than did those for the smoothbore model. Many .69 caliber muskets were issued early in the war as even older model muskets were presssed into service to quickly arm both the U.S. forces and the Confederate Army. The pattern for these boxes was cut from a set of original patterns (meaning once rempoved?) All items are made in a small one-man, veteran operated, shop using American leather and parts (no foreign stuff here!)(This is not my day job either, so I can provide items cheaper than the big boys, like this one for instance.) Shop prices, check my feedback, then bid with confidence. Most items ship next day via USPS. "THIS AIN'T NO MUSEUM, THIS STUFF IS FOR SALE!"
