General Wallace was in command at the battle; after an all day fight, Gen Wallace and his men retreated toward Baltimore after being overwhelmed by a superior in numbers force. However, the one day of grace for the Washington DC military district allowed sufficient time to bring in Army of the Potomac reinforcements by steamboat from Petersburg and by train from elsewhere, preventing the sack of the city.
